Description:
Beautiful knitting deserves beautiful finishing. A well-executed seam can be invisible, decorative, structural, or even become a design element. In this hands-on class, you'll master most needed seaming techniques used in professional knitwear.
Learn how to join knitted fabric with confidence. We'll cover a few of mattress stitches, grafting, shoulder joins with three-needle bind-offs, and other techniques that create smooth, durable, and elegant results.
By the end of this class, you'll know exactly which seam to choose for every situation and how to make every sweater, cardigan, or accessory look professionally finished.
Prerequisites: Basic knitting skills.
Homework
Homework #1: With worsted and light-colored yarn make 4 swatches in Stockinette stitch as follows:
Each swatch:
CO 30 sts.
Row 1: Sl1 with yarn in front (wyf), purl to last st, k1.
Row 2: Sl1 wyf, bring yarn to back, knit to end.
Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 3"/7.5 cm. Bind off all sts.
Block the swatch.
Homework #2: With worsted and light-colored yarn make 2 swatches as follows:
CO 20 sts.
Row 1: Sl1 wyf, bring yarn to back, knit to end.
Repeat this row until piece measures 1"/2.5 cm.
With waste yarn work 2 more rows. Do not bind off.
With stitches on waste yarn, block your swatches. Undo waste yarn and place stitches back on needles in class or before.
Supplies: Homework swatches, extra needles of the same size (no matter circular or double-pointed), tapestry needle, a few locking stitch markers.
